Chapter Seventeen

Crimson

Crimson hit the ground on all fours, her palms skidding along the dirt as she fought to hold her focus. She drilled deep into the collar’s magic with her own, battering against the gems that fought back hard, attempting to contain her, to nullify her power. It might have worked on a lesser witch, but her sisters’ clumsy magic was etched into the collar’s manufacturing and Crimson found the exact spot where the weakest link finally broke apart. The collar shattered into pieces and fell to the ground, the gems losing all color and trace of power.

She needed to get back, to find Talon and Valor. Anxiety poked at her from all sides, prodding her to do something reckless. She fought to maintain control. She needed time to think—a moment to quiet her brain so she could come up with a plan.

“Is everyone okay?” Lucki’s magic still sparked over her arms and chest and radiated a halo around her head, a dazzling kaleidoscope of color.

The familiars were slowly deescalating—huffing, puffing and chuffing to get themselves from raging Fortis beasts to something else.

“I wasn’t expecting you to do that.” Crimson accepted Lucki’s offered hand, if only to keep the peace for now, then hauled herself to her feet.

Crimson wasn’t sure if she meant she wasn’t expecting Lucki to pull them all through a portal with a magical tether or if she meant she wasn’t expecting Lucki to demand a seat on the throne. Both had been shocking turns from the plan she’d laid out with Lucki in Weeping Falls. Was Lucki putting on a show for Tabitha and Wyvern or was she really a duplicitous witch, laying the groundwork to turn on Crimson as soon as she got the crystal?

“I’ve been practicing,” Lucki said, like she wasn’t even thinking about what had happened back in the throne room. “I’ve been testing the limits of my power over the last few months and experimenting with these portal things. I figured it would make sense for us to start at the cat house where I probably sent Angelica when I dragged her through the portal with me during our battle.”

Crimson scanned the area, her senses alert for any pulse of power that might indicate another witch, one who possessed the powerful Crystal of Shade. She detected nothing but a mixed-up mash of old, decaying power, likely whatever had been used to construct the building that stood before them. The house was three stories, with a turret-like circular area and a wraparound porch. It was black, made of brick and wood, and looked nothing like anything Crimson had ever seen in Shade. It did, however, resemble the house in Weeping Falls where she’d sat with Lucki and agreed on a plan…a plan that Lucki had tossed out of the window when facing Crimson’s sisters.

“Isabel built this a long time ago as a kind of safe house hideaway.” Lucki averted her eyes as she talked, checking to see where her familiars were, like there
